if I was a songwriter…

I think I can do OK at simple tunes, but so far song lyrics have been intimidating. but I used to write short stories and poems back in the day, and some of them we’re OK, so maybe I should just sit down and work at it. but ideally this is the songwriter I’d be, for songs with words at least:

3 parts Gillian Welch
2 parts Julie/Buddy Miller
2 parts Bill Mallonee
1 part Glen Phillips (from Toad tws)
1 part Ben Folds
1 part John Newton (and similar contemporaries)

Mix well, with feeling. Add mandolin to taste. Serves 4.

as for instrumentals, it’d probably be something along the lines of a young Bela Fleck and a young Chris Thile, but far more simple, since 1. I’m not that good and 2. I like things slower and simpler these days.

  1. I like that mix…surprise surprise. Maybe we can work out lyrics together…we’ve definitely come up with some silly ones in the past.
